Why Ultem® (PEI) for sterilization trays

When trays cycle through steam autoclaves and low-temperature processes day after day, material choice decides longevity. Ultem® (PEI) combines a high glass-transition temperature around 217 °C, exceptional hydrolytic stability, and chemical resistance so trays resist creep, warpage, and whitening even after repeated sterilization. Select healthcare grades are compatible with steam (up to ~134 °C), vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) gas plasma, EtO, gamma, UV-C, and e-beam methods.

Machined, not molded - so your tray fits perfectly

Because Enplas machines trays from our own extruded Ultem® stock shapes, you are not bound by mold sizes. We produce the exact outer dimensions, wall thickness, and corner radii your instrument set needs, with:

  • Vent and condensate patterns tuned for steam flow and quick drying
  • Instrument retention features (pockets, rails, tie-down posts) sized per tool geometry
  • Stacking ledges and lids for set organization and transport
  • Laser-markable panels for UDI, department, or kit identifiers

Ultem grades’ sterilization resilience and dimensional stability make them ideal for thin-wall sections and long, flat surfaces that must stay true through many cycles.

Sterilization-aware design support

Our engineering team designs for sterilization realities: steam access, shadowing, drain paths, and low-stress corners. We recommend fillets, ribbing, and hole patterns that balance stiffness with flow—and we’ll guide grade selection, e.g., unfilled Ultem® 1000 for clarity and toughness vs. glass-reinforced varieties for extra rigidity. Healthcare-focused Ultem® HU grades are noted for repeat-cycle compatibility in steam and VHP and offer biocompatibility options (ISO 10993 / USP Class VI) where required.
